Google vs. OpenAI: The Release War (and Why Deep Research Changes Everything)
On the same day GPT-5.2 launches, Google drops a bombshell: an agent capable of doing “deep research” without making things up.
Timing is everything. And in the tech world, timing is often synonymous with a “cheap shot.” On Thursday, while the world awaited the release of OpenAI’s GPT-5.2 (“Garlic”), Google decided to spoil the party by releasing its new agent: Gemini Deep Research.
It’s no coincidence. It’s a declaration of war. But beyond the Silicon Valley gossip, the technology underneath is impressive.
Don’t Call It a Chatbot
Gemini Deep Research isn’t for asking it for a carbonara recipe. It’s an agent based on the Gemini 3 Pro model (Google’s most advanced) designed to synthesize mountains of information and handle prompts with enormous contexts.
The real “killer feature”? Its ability to minimize hallucinations during long tasks. Anyone who works with autonomous agents knows this is the number-one problem: if AI has to make 100 autonomous decisions in an hour, just one wrong decision is enough to invalidate all the work. Google says this is its “most factual” model ever.
Interactions API: A Gift for Devs
The juicy part for us developers isn’t so much the final report as theInteractions API. Google is allowing us to integrate SOTA research capabilities (State of the Art) directly into our apps. That means we can build software that autonomously performs due diligence, financial analysis, or drug safety research within our own proprietary systems.
The Benchmarks (and Apocalyptic Names)
To prove it’s the best, Google did what everyone does: it created a new benchmark, imaginatively named DeepSearchQA. But it also tested the agent on “Humanity’s Last Exam” (yes, that really is its name), an independent test full of impossible niche questions.
The result? Google says it won. But the initial data shows that GPT-5.2 Pro is dangerously close in second place, and even better on the BrowserCompbenchmark.
Graffico’s Take 🔴
Google’s vision is clear: we’re heading toward a future where humans will no longer search Google. Their AI agents will do it for them. Soon we’ll see this technology integrated into Google Finance, Search, and NotebookLM.
For businesses, the message is simple: “research” is no longer a manual activity. It’s an API.
